Unveiling the Heart Behind LEAD Center For Youth
When people inquire about LEAD Center For Youth, sharing our mission and vision often elicits a familiar response: “Good for you.” Yet, this trite acknowledgment falls short of understanding the deeper why behind LEAD. For me, LEAD is not merely an endeavor; it’s a love letter to Atlanta, a gratitude for the city that shaped my foundation.
Connecting with Atlanta’s Roots: A Personal Journey
My roots run deep in Atlanta – from Atlanta Public Schools to sports with Parks and Recreation, Cub Scouts at Elizabeth Baptist Church, and graduation from Westlake High School. LEAD is a heartfelt thanksgiving to the city that played a pivotal role in my upbringing.
A Deeper Dive into LEAD’s Why: A Calling Fulfilled
Why do I co-found LEAD with my wife, Kelli? The answer lies in a calling, a purpose larger than ourselves. LEAD isn’t just a program; it’s a commitment to empower an at-risk generation, echoing a calling from a higher source. It’s a fulfillment of purpose.
Navigating Frustrations: “Good for You” Syndrome
Frustrations arise when the profound mission of LEAD is met with a dismissive “good for you.” The magic, however, resides in the why. I make it a habit to delve into others’ whys, recognizing that the why is often a calling from a divine source. Co-founding LEAD is my answered calling.
Current Pain Points at LEAD: Seeking a Seat at the Table
Despite our impactful programming, LEAD faces challenges locally and nationally in securing a seat at the education table. The struggle is to ensure that conversations encompass both academics and athletics. Baseball, especially for African American boys, often faces reluctance compared to football and basketball.
The LEAD Solution: Empowering Major League Citizens
LEAD’s evidence-based approach aims to develop Major League Citizens, fostering gainfully employed, civically engaged individuals that are radical philanthropists. Our programming cultivates Black boys to become Major Leaguers and Major League Citizens because both can be done for the good of the Black boys that become Black men and the communities they live in. Financial support is crucial to sustaining our programming, an investment in developing a generation capable of positively influencing the economy.
Inspiration from Mandela: The Power of Sports for Social Justice
LEAD draws inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s belief in the power of sports for social change. Mandela’s role in bringing the FIFA World Cup to South Africa exemplifies the potential of sports in generating social change.
A Call to Action: The LEAD Vision and Mission
LEAD’s mission is to empower an at-risk generation to overcome the curveballs of crime, poverty, and racism through sports-based youth development. Our vision is to develop Black youth into Ambassadors, leading Atlanta to lead the world.
We Believe: A Manifesto for LEAD’s Impact
LEAD believes in providing opportunities for success, extracting valuable life lessons from baseball and tennis, eliminating financial barriers, and defining greatness by service to the community.
Asking Why: Uncover the Deeper Magic
So, the next time you hear about LEAD, don’t just say “good for you.” Instead, ask why – uncover the deeper magic behind our commitment to transform lives. How can you help us do it with your influence and affluence?
